Tooth Extraction
- Last resort – why extract?
- Crowded mouth
- Tooth decay
- Don’t worry
When all other treatment options have been ruled out, having your tooth extracted may be the right choice. Don’t stress, although it sounds scary, we’ll make sure it’s an easy experience for you.
There are many reasons to extract a tooth – a crowded mouth, wisdom teeth, an infection or a significant risk of infection.
When you have a crowded mouth, your teeth may be too large for your gums or your gums too small to fit all your teeth. You might have a tooth wanting to break through the gum without enough space – this is common with wisdom teeth which often need removing.
The tooth extraction will create space and stop your teeth from pushing each other around in your mouth and causing more issues.
When you have significant tooth decay, sometimes we can’t heal the infection even with a root canal or antibiotics. When this happens it’s best to remove the tooth and save yourself from bigger problems down the line.
Most decayed or infected teeth can be removed without any trouble. When complications do arise a tooth may need to be surgically removed. This can be performed safely within the Team Dental practice and your dentist may need to suture the site afterward.
A tooth extraction doesn’t need to be a painful or scary experience. We can comfortably numb the tooth using local anaesthetic and even before administering this, we can use a numbing paste on your gum. With the numbing paste, you’ll hardly even feel the local anaesthetic being applied.
The cost varies depending on the position of the tooth and the degree of difficulty.

- How often should I get a check-up?
- Dental Checkup
- Dental Hygiene Examination
To look after your teeth and keep your smile at its best, we recommend a dental check-up at least once a year. It’s also a good idea to have a dental hygiene examination with our hygienist at the same time.
As well as keeping your teeth healthy, a regular check-up can help save you money in the long run by catching problems early on.
A dental check-up with us includes a thorough check of all of your teeth, your gums and an x-ray to see if there are any problems.
During your check-up, we’ll ask you about any previous dental work and check-in on how your dental health is going since your last check-up. X-rays will help us examine parts of your teeth that we can’t see by eye. Have a read of our Dental X-Rays page to know more.
After your check-up is done, we’ll tell you if any work is needed to keep your smile healthy. Your dentist will explain what needs to be done and how much it will cost. This means you won’t have any surprises.
After your check-up, we recommend you see one of our specialised hygienists. A dental hygiene examination is good in many ways. Our hygienist will check and record your gum health, plus they scale and clean your teeth thoroughly. They will teach you how to clean and maintain your teeth well after the dental hygienist examination.
An hygienist appointment normally takes 45 minutes.
